Functional nano materials and devices

Technology today requires novel, advanced materials combining perfectly optimum functionality with low cost, reliability and preservation of environment. Nanotechnology is an ideal approach towards this scope, since size reduction of matter in the nano-scale can induce novel properties and functionalities. In parallel, the advances in materials science allow easy and excellent control of materials properties, leading in composite structures with excellent performance, suitable for various applications.

The purpose of this activity is the design, synthesis, characterization and testing of functional materials and composites suitable for applications in energy, environment, photonics, telecommunications etc. For the synthesis of these materials, low cost and environmentally up-scalable manufacturing technologies are employed, permitting at the same time the tailoring of the characteristics and the functionality of the materials. Functionalities of materials currently under investigation include:

  • Composite high voltage insulators
  • Nonlinear optical materials
  • Light induced modification of hydrophylicity
  • Transparent electrodes
  • Electromagnetic shielding
  • Nanostructured coatings on textiles


Center of Materials Technology and Photonics (CEMATEP) is a joint laboratory of the departments of the School of Applied Technology of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete (TEI Crete), established in 2003. Its activities are dedicated to the growth, study and application of novel materials and photonics.

Research activities

The research efforts in CEMATEP are focused on the exploitation of advanced thin films, nanostructures and nanocomposites suitable for applications like solar cells, chromic layers for solar control coatings, optoelectronics, photodetectors and organic electronics. CEMATEP is well equipped with state of the art facilities and its members have important scientific outcome as well as excellent national and international collaborations.
